Electronic prescriptions required, when, exceptions

In plain English

Starting January 1, 2021, doctors and other prescribers in Missouri have to send prescriptions for certain controlled substances (Schedule II, III, or IV drugs) electronically straight to a pharmacy. There are many exceptions — for example, if the technology fails, if a patient asks for a paper prescription, if the prescriber is a vet, or if waiting for an electronic prescription would harm the patient. A pharmacist does not have to check whether an exception applies before filling a paper, faxed, or called-in prescription. A prescriber who breaks this rule can face discipline from their professional licensing board.
