A vehicle cannot display any plate, tag, or sign on the front or back except the official plate from the state, a special placard the law allows, or an official city license tag. A sign that says things like 'license lost' or 'license applied for' cannot be used in place of a real plate.
301.320. Other s prohibited. — No person shall operate a motor vehicle or trailer on which there is displayed on the front or rear thereof any other plate, tag or bearing any number except the plate furnished by the or the placard herein , and the official tag of any of this state, nor shall there be displayed on any motor vehicle or trailer a placard, or tag bearing the words "license lost", "license applied for", or words of similar import, as a substitute for such or such placard.
