Drive on right of highway

In plain English

This law is about which side of the road to drive and park on. Parked vehicles must stay as far to the right as possible. Moving vehicles must drive on the right side of the road. There are a few exceptions, like passing another car, turning left, road construction closing the right side, or a one-way street. On divided highways, a driver cannot cross the barrier or make a U-turn except at intersections or marked spots — emergency and law enforcement vehicles are exempt from that rule. On roads with three or more lanes, a driver must stay in one lane and only move when it is safe. Slower vehicles must use the right lane. Big trucks over 48,000 pounds cannot use the far left lane on interstate highways in urban areas with three or more lanes going the same direction. Breaking this law is a misdemeanor, and the level depends on whether it caused a threat of an accident or an actual accident.

Penalties named in this law
