Distance to be maintained when overtaking a bicycle

When a driver passes a bicycle going the same direction on the road, the driver must leave enough safe space between the car and the bike while passing, and keep that space until fully past the bike. Breaking this rule is a minor violation, but if a crash happens because of it, it becomes a more serious offense.

304.678. Distance to be maintained when a bicycle — violation, . — 1. The of a motor vehicle overtaking a bicycle in the same direction on the , as defined in section 300.010, shall leave a safe distance, when passing the bicycle, and shall maintain clearance until safely past the overtaken bicycle.
