Identification, acceptable forms

In plain English

This law lists the forms of ID that count as proof of age when buying or drinking alcohol. Accepted IDs include a driver's license, state ID card, military ID, or passport — as long as it is valid and not expired. When someone shows an ID, the person selling alcohol checks the photo and physical description to make sure it matches. If a seller follows these rules but still accidentally sells to someone underage, they may not be punished if they acted in good faith. Anyone who fakes, changes, or misrepresents a driver's license or ID card can be fined up to $1,000 and/or jailed for up to one year.
