Repair or replacement
An odometer (the mileage counter in a vehicle) can be fixed or swapped out, as long as it still shows the same mileage as before. If the new or fixed odometer cannot show the old mileage, it gets reset to zero and a written note must be stuck to the left door frame. That note has to say what the mileage was before the repair and when the repair happened. Removing or changing that note is against the law.
407.531. Repair or replacement — notice of alteration, how shown, removal prohibited, . — 1. Nothing in sections 407.511 to 407.556 shall prevent the , repair, or replacement of an , provided the indicated thereon remains the same as before the service, repair, or replacement occurred.
2. When the repaired or replaced odometer is incapable of registering the same mileage as before the service, repair, or replacement, the odometer shall be adjusted to read zero and a notice in writing shall be attached to the left door frame of the vehicle by the owner or his , specifying the mileage prior to repair or replacement of the odometer and the date on which it was repaired or replaced.
3. Removal or alteration of the notice required by 2 of this section is an .
