Definitions
This part of Missouri law explains what key words mean when used in the landlord-tenant chapters. A landlord is the owner or someone the owner puts in charge of a property. A lease is any agreement — written or spoken — to use a property. A lessee is the person renting the property who pays rent. Premises means the property being rented, which can include land, buildings, mobile homes, or even vehicles used as a home or business. Rent is the regular payment a renter makes to a landlord for using the property. A tenant is someone living on the property with the landlord's permission.
