Filings

In plain English

This law is about filing papers to ask a court for protection from domestic violence. When a courthouse is closed — like on weekends, evenings, or holidays — a person can still file those papers with any available court in their area. The person asking for protection does not have to share their home address in public court papers, and does not have to put their Social Security number on any forms. The state's supreme court is in charge of making sure people can always file these papers, even when courts are normally closed.
