Exempt property applied for, when
When someone dies, their surviving spouse or the person taking care of their unmarried minor children can ask for certain protected property from the estate. They need to ask for it before it gets handed out or sold. Once they receive that property, it cannot be taken away to pay off debts the deceased person owed.
