Application to offenses committed before and after enactment
This law explains which rules apply based on when a crime happened. For crimes done on or after January 1, 1979, the Missouri criminal code rules apply. For crimes done before January 1, 1979, the old laws that existed at that time still apply instead.
556.031. to s committed before and after . — 1. The of this code shall govern the and punishment for any offense defined in this code and committed after January 1, 1979, as well as the construction and application of any to a for such an offense.
2. Offenses defined outside of this code and not repealed shall remain in effect, but unless otherwise expressly provided or unless the context otherwise requires, the provisions of this code shall govern the construction of any such offenses committed after January 1, 1979, as well as the construction and application of any defense to a prosecution for such offenses.
3. The provisions of this code do not apply to or govern the construction of and punishment for any offense committed prior to January 1, 1979, or the construction and application of any defense to a prosecution for such an offense. Such an offense must be and punished according to the provisions of law existing at the time of the thereof in the same manner as if this code had not been enacted, the provisions of section 1.160 .
