If a police officer sees a license plate that is hard to read, they tell the state and tell the car owner to get a new plate. If the owner does not apply for a new plate within 15 days, the state can cancel the car's registration until the owner applies. Sometimes the state will give a new plate for free. If someone gets a new plate but does not turn in the old damaged one, they can be punished.

2. If the owner has not made within fifteen days, the director of revenue may cancel such registration and notify the and such cancellation shall remain in force until the application has been filed.
