When an executor or administrator is put in charge of a deceased person's estate, they have to sign a bond (like a financial promise). That bond protects everyone who has a stake in the estate — such as family members or creditors. The people who co-sign that bond (called sureties) are equally responsible along with the executor or administrator if something goes wrong.
