When a dead person's estate doesn't have enough money to pay all its debts, sometimes specific gifts left in the will have to be reduced or sold. This law says that when that happens, the people who received those specific gifts all share the cost fairly, based on how much their gift was worth. A court decides exactly how much each person owes, and that money can be collected by the person running the estate or by the other gift recipients.
473.623. between . — When it is necessary under the of section 473.620 that there be an of , whether of , the court may by determine the manner in which such abatement shall be accomplished, so that the of such abatement be borne by all es according to the value of their respective specific devises, and if any specific devise is sold or applied to accomplish such abatement, the other specific devisees shall be to contribute the respective amounts necessary so that the burden of such abatement will be borne proportionately as provided in this section. The court in its order shall determine the respective amounts to be so contributed and the same may be recovered by the or or by the devisees entitled .
