If someone is supposed to get money or property from a person who died, but that person also owed money to the estate, the person in charge of the estate can subtract what is owed before handing anything over. It is treated as if the debt was settled at the time of death, and any interest is figured from that date.
473.630. Right of retainer. — When a of an is indebted to the estate, the amount of the if due, or the of the indebtedness, if not due, may be treated as an by the or against any or property, real or personal, of the estate to which such distributee is entitled.
