A city's municipal court can hire a person or a company to be a probation officer for people who broke city rules. The city does not have to pay for this — instead, the people on probation pay a fee to cover the cost. The probation officer or company then watches over those people and helps them get back on track, following the rules the judge sets.

Persons or guilty to ordinance violations and placed on probation by municipal or city court judges shall contribute a fee to the court in the amount set forth in section 559.604 to pay the cost of their provided by a probation officer employed by the court or by a contract probation officer as provided for in section 559.604.
