A college or university can register and get a title for a car it built using only solar power to race in a national solar energy competition. The school fills out paperwork, pays fees, and gets a special license plate that shows the school name and the word 'solar.' The solar car does not need the usual safety or emissions inspections, and the school decides when it is allowed on public roads.
301.800. of solar-powered vehicle — — — fees — inspections, operation. — 1. Any motor vehicle assembled by a two- or four-year institution of higher education exclusively utilizing solar power and built to compete in a competition organized to foster interest in solar energy shall be and titled by the , other laws regulating licensing of motor vehicles to the contrary .
2. Such institution shall file an application in a form prescribed by the , , that such vehicle meets the requirements of 1 of this section.
3. The issued by the director shall be the of the institution and shall display the term "solar" in a manner prescribed by the director.
4. The institution shall pay the applicable fees as determined by the director.
5. Such motor vehicle shall be from the inspections required by section 307.350 and section 643.315 and shall only be operated on the streets and highways with the approval of the institution of higher education.
