If someone needs to show proof that they can pay for damages from a car accident, one way to do it is by having their insurance company send a certificate to the state director. The certificate must show the start date of the insurance and list which cars are covered. A car cannot stay registered in that person's name unless it is listed on that certificate.
303.170. of responsibility by insurance . — 1. may be furnished by with the the written certificate of any to do business in this state certifying that there is in effect a for the of the person required to furnish proof of financial responsibility. Such certificate shall give the of such motor vehicle liability policy, which date shall be the same as the effective date of the certificate, and shall by or by reference all motor vehicles covered thereby, unless the policy is issued to a person who is not the owner of a motor vehicle.
2. No motor vehicle shall be or continue to be in the name of any person required to file proof of financial responsibility unless such motor vehicle is so in such a certificate.
