When someone from another state dies and had property in Missouri, Missouri courts have the power to handle that property. For things like stock certificates, bonds, or insurance policies, the property is considered to be located wherever the physical paper document is kept. For other money owed or legal rights that don't have a physical document, the property is considered to be located wherever the person who owes the money can be found.
473.671. of property — of . — The courts of this state have jurisdiction over all and of a having a situs in this state. For the purpose of such jurisdiction it is as to other states and countries, and declared with respect to this state, that the situs of debts, rights and which are embodied in legal instruments such as stock certificates, , , insurance policies payable to an and other similar items is in that state or country in which such legal instruments are located, so that whatever state or country has jurisdiction of such instruments has, and of right ought to have, jurisdiction to upon or otherwise direct the of the debts, rights and choses in action which they embody, or voluntarily such jurisdiction to other states and countries. For such purpose the situs of other debts, rights and choses in action is where the debtor is found.
