A subpoena is a legal paper telling someone they have to show up to testify. It can be handed to that person by a sheriff, coroner, marshal, constable, or a regular person who has no stake in the case. Officers like sheriffs and marshals can also deliver subpoenas in nearby counties that border the county where the court is located.
